The Restless Monkey King Sun Wukong, the Stone Monkey born from a rock, had already gained immortality and a host of magical abilities. He had learned language, etiquette, and 72 polymorphic transformations. Yet, despite his great power, he felt incomplete. He was the King of the Fruit and Flower Mountain, but he had no weapon that could match his strength. The ordinary iron spears and swords of his subjects would snap like twigs in his hands. He needed a weapon that was divine, something that could withstand the chaotic energy of a god-like being. He decided to seek the wisdom of the Dragon King of the East Sea, Aoguang.
The Dragon's Treasure Wukong used his water-repelling spell and dived into the deep ocean, arriving at the magnificent,pearl-encrusted palace of the Dragon King. He demands a worthy weapon. The Dragon King, initially attempting to appease him with precious but standard divine items (like an iron halberd or a nine-tooth rake), realizes Wukong is no ordinary demon. "Your Majesty, I cannot find a weapon heavy enough," Wukong complained after trying everything.Aoguang, weary, mentions an ancient relic: a gigantic, rusty iron pillar used by the Great Yu to measure the depth of the ocean. "It is useless to us, but maybe you can lift it," he muttered.
The Golden Cudgel He leads Wukong to the deepest part of the palace. There, standing like a colossal tower, was the Ruyi Jingu Bang (Compliant Golden-Hooped Cudgel), a massive, black iron pillar with two golden rings. It was huge. The Dragon King chuckled, believing Wukong could never move it. But as Wukong approached, the ancient pillar felt his arrival. "A bit smaller would be better," Wukong whispered. To everyone's shock, the pillar shrank. "Smaller still!" Wukong commanded. It shrank again, until it was a manageable staff of solid black iron, about eight feet long, with the golden bands gleaming. On the side, Chinese characters appeared: "The Compliant Golden Hooped Cudgel; Weight: Thirteen Thousand Five Hundred Catties (Approx. 8 Tons)." Wukong swung it, creating a whirlpool that shook the entire palace. It was perfect.
